4 Steps in Organizing Your Wardrobe
Does the thought of organizing your wardrobe overwhelm you? Worry not: these tips from Chandra Interiors are here to help.
One thing we tend to overlook in interior design is our closets. This is because it’s almost like a secret space that’s just for us. Our guests don’t normally go snooping around our closet, do they?
Chandra Interiors strongly believes that, in order to have the perfect interior design, our things need to be orderly and in the right place. A disorganized closet does not belong in a pristine household!
This article aims to help you get organized so that you can invite even your mother to look inside your closet!
If you’re moving into a new home or looking for a new one, Deline’s wardrobes are your perfect choice. Deline is a German company that focuses on building modular kitchens and wardrobes. 1. Declutter to give your closet room to breathe
Before you begin to plan how to organize your closet, you need to turn your attention towards the things you no longer want in your closet. While this can be an awfully painful step for a lot of people, Chandra Interiors believes this is also the most liberating! This will not only help clean up closet space but it will also free up mind space.
Don’t know where to start? Follow these three steps:
Dump
Sort
Breathe
First, take everything out of your closet. Next, sort through the items and organize them into 3 piles.
The first pile is the “sell/give” pile. This is where you put all the things that you don’t want to use anymore that you could either sell or give away to relatives or charities. The second pile is the “throw” pile where you keep all the things that are too tattered or old to give away or sell. The last pile is the “keep” pile where you, of course, put everything you can still keep.
When decluttering, it’s important to be very objective and realistic. If you’re the type who gets emotionally attached to things, remember that clutter is clutter. Sometimes it’s okay to get rid of these things you are emotionally attached to. It doesn’t mean you’re throwing the memories away.
After you’re done separating them into 3 categories, it’s time to pack up the first two piles. Put the “sell/give” pile in a box and set it aside (Don’t forget to label it!) then get a garbage bag and toss in everything from the “throw” pile.
Before we go to the next step, breathe and take a break. Drink water before you get back to work.
2. Clean your closet
Before you arrange the clothes you are keeping, give your closet a good cleaning. All you’ll need are a sponge/towel and the cleaning solution of your choice. Lightly dampen the cloth and wipe away. This ensures that the closet is completely clean before you put back all the items you will keep.
If you want to go the extra mile and have that brand new and fresh feeling, toss the clothes into the laundry and wipe down your jewelry before putting them in. This will make the process a bit longer, but you can always do something else (like more decluttering) while waiting for the laundry to get done.
3. Compartmentalize and assign a place for everything
This is a key step that will help you in maintaining an organized closet. While it may be tempting to just toss everything together to finally wrap up this task, making time now to organize your closet into compartments will make getting ready in the morning much easier.
A few ways to separate your items are this way:
Tops
Bottoms
Underwear
Socks
Jewelry
House clothes
Pajamas
And if you have hanging space:
Suits
Dresses
Pressed tops
Pressed bottoms
It looks complicated but the opposite is true. You are actually simplifying your closet and making it easy for you when you begin looking for things. If you share closet space with someone, be sure to orient them on the designated spaces to avoid confusion. If you have kids, we also suggest putting labels to teach them where to put things.
This is why the interior design of your closet is important and you have to be certain on how much space and compartments you need. If you need any help with this, contact Chandra Interiors today.
4. To fold or to hang?
This is an important consideration not only when it comes to organizing but also preserving your clothes. Know the material of your clothes, if they’re better hung or folded, and organize them accordingly.
For example, you could have the best suit in town but, if you get lazy to press and hang it and just decide to leave it folded, it could ruin the overall structure of the suit.
This is actually essential in preparing your work clothes for the week. Even for clothes that aren’t usually pressed, it’s better to hang them to avoid awkward creases and to make dressing up for work easier. Just open your closet and viola! Work clothes are hanging, clean and unwrinkled, ready to make you look and feel great throughout the day.
To reiterate: fold everything properly before putting them in the cubicles and make sure to press and hang the rest neatly. Be mindful of their positions on the hanger to avoid the awkward “hanger shoulder.”
Organizing your closet isn’t something you do everyday because it is a tedious, time-consuming task. But putting in the time and effort means freeing up your time and energy on other days when you need to get dressed. An organized closet also has a good, calming effect on the psyche, similar to an orderly and clean office, house, or room.
