How To Design an Aesthetically Functional Working Space

Don’t just squeeze in a table and chair in a corner to make a home office. Since you will most likely be spending many hours there, one needs to consider practicality and functionality, not to mention aesthetics, in designing a home office.

At Chandra Interiors, we pay attention and spend time in designing working spaces for our clients because we believe that a good design means good business.

Here are some design solutions to make a functional yet beautiful home office:

1. CHOOSE THE BEST TABLE

When choosing your work desk, consider how much space you have and what office essentials are you accommodating there. The work table should be spacious to put your computer and other essentials, but it shouldn’t be huge that it cramps the office space.

Maximize your space with a corner desk. It splits your work area – with one side meant for computer, and the other for files. For people who are always mobile, the height adjustable standing desk is all the rage now, which allows you to sit down or stand up while working. Find a multi-functional desk, with handy wire channels and storage drawers to save space.

2. INVEST ON COMFORT

Working behind your desk for a long time requires a comfortable chair. Select an ergonomically designed chair that matches the interior of the room. Consider an office chair that can be adjusted its seat height, back angle, and armrests, among others.

3. BRING COLORS TO YOUR SPACE

While white and beige are the go-to colors, it doesn’t hurt to put some colors to your walls. Some shades can help affect your work mood. Some people prefer bright colors such as orange and yellow to keep them going, while others choose green and blue shades to calm them.

4. SETTLE ON A VIEW

While those who live in a concrete jungle might not have the luxury of a good view, you can position your desk in such a way you have something interesting to look at. Spruce up your window with shutters, which can allow natural light in and block glare. Curtains is also a good window design treatment.

If your room doesn’t have a window, try positioning your desk to face the door.

5. FIND THE RIGHT LIGHT

Clever lighting design is crucial in a working space. Bad lighting might result to eye strain and headaches, which lessen work productivity and efficiency.

Natural light is always the best choice. Position your work area as close  to the window as possible to get the best of the daylight. It can also save you from expenses on electricity.

If you don’t have a window, an overhead lighting is a must to supply illumination to the entire space. Make sure to arrange your computer monitor in such a way that there is no glare from the overhead light. A task lamp can soften the harsh light and set the mood. Opt for a pendant light if you don’t have enough space.

6. DECLUTTER THE WIRES

Unsightly wirings is a challenge in designing home office. To hide these eyesores, position your computers and printers as close to the outlets as possible. Employ fabric cord cover, desk grommet, cord winders or any wire organizer to tame the wires.

For those who have a challenging working area, flexible plastic trunking is a good option. Invest dual-purpose items such as desk lamps or speakers that allow wireless charging for your mobile phone.

7. PERSONALIZE YOUR SPACE

Office space doesn’t have to be too rigid and stringent. You can put some personal touch in a professional way.

Accessorize with something extra for a contemporary look. Wrap bulletin boards with geometric fabric, or choose a decorative waste basket. Hang artworks, inspirational prints, or classic paintings. to give it some character. You can also display your collection while you are at it. Put some planters on your window sill.

8. MAXIMIZE SPACE

Have small space? Maximize by mixing and matching office essentials. Floating shelves on the walls help to keep some office equipment off your desk, while  vertical cabinet holds files. Wooden drawers for sorting items and storing office supply. Fitted furniture can make the most of available spaces.

9. DIVIDE AND CONQUER

Not all of work-from-home employees have spare room to use as office space. Some section off part of a large room to create a home office. Room dividers come in handy. Curtains and screens can be used to separate space.  Built-in shelves and cabinets can double as dividers.
