Types of Paint Sheen

It might surprise you that when picking paint colors for your room, the color itself isn’t the only thing you have to consider. If you really want to make sure the coordination of your room’s interior design is on point, you also have to pay attention to the paint sheen, which is the glossiness of the paint. Not only can paint sheens be a subtle way to instantly change the look of your room, they also have their own functionality.

There are five types of paint sheens, which are flat, semi-gloss, high-gloss, satin, and eggshell. Let Chandra Interiors walk you through the five paint sheens and where they’re commonly used:

1. Flat

There are two types of flat sheen; matte and enamel. Matte has absolutely no sheen while enamel has the most minimal sheen but is easier to clean. Flat is best for ceilings, closets, adult bedrooms, and garages.

2. Eggshell

Has a bit more shine than flat and is easy to clean. Best for dining rooms, bathrooms, and family rooms.

3. Satin

This is a step shinier than eggshell and is super wipeable which makes it perfect for high-traffic areas, especially if there are kids involved! Best for living rooms, mudrooms, hallways, and kid’s rooms.

4. Semi-gloss Enamel

Semi-gloss is shiny but not glass-like. This is more of an accent paint but you can still use it any way you’d prefer. Best on laundry, bathroom, kitchen, cabinetries.

This is the ultimate shiny sheen which is, again, leans more towards being used for accents. It’s best for trim, windowsills, woodwork, and furniture.
